UIUC Students win faa design competition

CEE Graduate Students Win Three Awards in the FAA Design Competition for Universities

Airport Operation and Maintenance Challenge

The FAA Offices of Safety Services and Airport Safety and Standards, in partnership with AAAE, ACC, ACI-NA, and NASAO, sponsored a Design Competition for Universities. This competition gives students at U.S. colleges and universities an opportunity to address technical challenges in the areas of Airport Operation and Maintenance; Runway Safety/Runway Incursions; and Airport Environmental Interactions.

The competition was for the 2007 - 2008 academic year. UIUC students won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards for the area of Airport Operation and Maintenance. The selection was made by a panel of FAA, industry and academic experts.

First Place: Jonguen Baek and Hao Wang - "Long-Lasting Pavement Structure Rehabilitation: Hot-Mix Asphalt Overlay with Steel Reinforcement Netting Interlayer System." This student entry was sponsored by Professor Imad Al-Qadi.

Second Place: Phillip Donovan - "Aircraft Wander Effects on Unbound Aggregate Layers." This student entry was sponsored by Professor Erol Tutumluer.

Third Place: Hasan Ozer - "A Fast and Automated Approach for Monitoring Groove Deterioration at Airport Pavements." This student entry was sponsored by Professor Imad Al-Qadi.
